On 25th June 2015, The Leadership Whisperers were sponsored by reed.co.uk as their headline speakers at Recruitstock, a recruitment festival for in-house recruiters.
It was too far to take Hermi and Rchi, our normal live event horse team so we identified two local horses and horse handlers to work with. It is always more of a stretch to work with horses we don’t know as we have no idea how they will respond to us, the event and the venue. It called for us to demonstrate our own leadership out of our comfort zones.
We were delighted to work with Patrick and his Portuguese Lusitano called Tetua and Sarah with her New Forest pony called Nettles. Here they are:
As always, we were delighted that members of the audience were courageous in volunteering to lead a horse and gain feedback from the rest of the audience on their leadership. 3 people led Tetua and Nettles and demonstrated clarity, communication, the power of relationship and compassion. They also showed the impact that minor hesitation or self-doubt can have on those around us.
TEAMWORK AND 3 POSITIONS OF LEADERSHIP:
We moved on to demonstrating three positions of leadership and eight more volunteers worked as a team to show this live in action. They worked with Nettles and then changed positions and worked with Tetua. After some initial resistance, they worked effortlessly and cohesively as a team.
It was interesting for the volunteers to understand what their default leadership positions are and to stretch into something new and understand the impact of that.
Some of the learning they took away was to trust that the team will follow, ensure you have someone who is the eyes and ears of the organisation or team, ensure communication goes both ways, be more focused and not get distracted, be more confident and to take responsibility for the whole team success and support others in their roles when required to achieve this.
RECRUITMENT CONSULTATION GROUP:
We announced that we are setting up a Recruitment Consultation group to explore how horses can support the assessment process for recruiting to help attract and retain top talent leaders. The horses are a powerful way of assessing the natural leadership skills of leaders and exploring default patterns of behaviour and openness to change.
